You may have noticed it already, but the days are getting significantly longer and the temperature outside is slowly but surely rising. The sun is maybe a bit shy, currently hiding behind a thick layer of rainy clouds where I live, but I know that it is there and that soon enough the ball of flames that keeps us alive will shower some much needed beams down upon me.It’s spring, and when you follow the meteorological seasons, then you know that it has been spring for a while already (in the Northern Hemisphere). Even the start of astronomical spring has been celebrated a month ago on the 21st of March, meaning that no matter how you look at it, we’re at least already ⅓ through the season of hay fever, finally dusting off the BBQ and still taking a jacket with you when going outside, just because you’ll never know when the sun will disappear again. It’s spring and that means creating a new Spotify playlist to celebrate the change in weather. It means looking for happy songs (but not ones that are too happy, because those are reserved for summer) and putting together a playlist that embodies running through a beautiful field of flowers or reading a book in a grassy meadow, avoiding the fact that there’s probably bugs crawling all over you. But that is part of the deal, you’d do anything for that perfect aesthetically pleasing picture for Instagram and Pinterest. And it was worth it, because I have indeed used your dreamy green and pastel photograph as cover for my “Spring 2025” playlist. It fits the theme perfectly. Thank you.
So, anyway, here are my song recommendations for this season. I may not be one of the girls that goes outside to take pretty aesthetic cottagecore pictures, but I will spend hours on Wikimedia Commons searching for anything that fits the intended vibe. Anything to not go outside while I’m suffering from my tree and grass allergies.
Bloom by The Paper Kites
You know when plants start to bloom? You guessed it right, during spring! Some plants will bloom later, but it's during early spring when the first eyes start to itch and water and people start sniffling and sneezing. This song is absolutely beautiful, so I try not to think too much about not being able to breathe through my nose when it's on.
Strawberry Blond by Mitski
I love strawberries. Have you ever bought a cheap chocolate bar at the supermarket and put it out in the sun for it to melt so you could dip strawberries in it? If you haven't then I highly recommend doing it the next time the sun shines brightly. It's amazing.
I Don't Know You by The MarĂas
I've had my doubts about putting this song in a playlist aimed towards spring, and honestly I'm still wondering if I shouldn't just delete it and move on, but I spent time creating the image above and I'm not letting it go to waste. It has fall and also summer evening vibes, but the softness of the song makes me choose spring.
Uptown Girl by Billy Joel
I've talked about frolicking in fields, but sometimes nature is too far away and / or too difficult to get to. For those people I recommend listening to this song. I think we all know Billy Joel and are aware of the fact that Uptown Girl is iconic. It's a very happy song, making you feel like the sky is clear and the sun is shining even when there's actually a thunderstorm. Despite it being so overly positive, I do think it gives off more spring vibes than summer ones, but let me know if you think differently about that
Be Yours by The Indien
I usually don't listen to the radio, but I was very glad I did when this song came on. I liked it and put it in last year's spring playlist where it slowly became a warm weather classic for me. It sadly isn't really popular which I think is a bummer, but it makes me extra glad I get to listen to it. If you like indiepop then I highly recommend listening to this song
Someone New by Hozier
Falling in love just a little ol' little bit everyday with someone new definitely gives off massive spring vibes. Yes, you can fall in love in every season, but wouldn't it be perfect to fall in love during spring?
Sun by Two Door Cinema Club
This song isn't summer just yet, but it's pretty close. It sounds like the middle or the end of May. When you can walk outside in short sleeves but the heat isn't killing you just yet. Maybe you will even need a thin jacket when the sun has set.
French Navy by Camera Obscura
If you've spent a week in a dusty library, waiting for some words to jump at you, then it definitely means you're in the middle of exam season. Summer vacation is right around the corner and you're in need of a break by the looks of it, but right now spring is here and you still have some unfinished work to complete. Relaxation is almost near, so don't worry.
In My Dreams by Red Velvet
If you think about spring, then you must think about the Feel My Rhythym EP by Red Velvet. This album is really good and its sound and aesthetic just screams enjoying strawberries in a field in the middle of April. At first I wanted to use the title track of this album for this post, especially with the paintings i've been using for each song, but in the end I chose In My Dreams. Both songs are incredible though.
Young Luv by Stayc
Are we saving the best for last? I think we are. Young Luv by Stayc is my forever spring anthem. I played this song on repeat when going on my first solo trip back in 2022. I had arrived in Vienna by train, it was the end of april, the weather was clearing up and the sun was finally showing its face. I walked around the city with this song as the soundtrack and everything was just absolutely perfect.
I think some songs are definitely destined for a specific season, but others are dependent on your personal experience with it. An album you played on repeat during your winter break will make you think of that season, despite what the songs may be about. I love that music is flexible like that. Sorting songs by seasons is such a weird concept if you think about it, but somehow it still works for us. The lyrics play a big role in this, and the genre can also determine if we think something fits cold weather or warm weather better, but it's mostly our personal experiences that decide what category we think something fits inside of. I think that's fun.
And that was it for today. I love sharing music, so this will probably become a series I will do every once in a while. I'll certainly be making a post like this for every season. If you want me to share music that fits a specific vibe or aesthetic, then don't hesitate to ask. Maybe I have some songs that fit the theme.
