Specific writing prompts

Young woman writing a letter (1874), by Frederico Zandomeneghi

Writing prompts

I love writing, from silly little stories to blog posts like these. I can spend hours typing away behind my trusty Chromebook until it’s long past twelve and my eyes are begging me to finally be allowed to close. I’ve always been passionate about writing, and while I at first wanted to ramble on about my own motivations for writing, I’ve decided to skip that topic* for today.

(*It’s a topic I will one day try to discuss with you all because I’ve just spent 3 long hours writing only half an essay about psycho-analyzing myself and dissecting my intricate motivation while on a sleep deprived Monster Energy Ultra White fueled typing binge. That writing will definitely not go to waste though, but to be honest, the result was a bit too personal for a casual fourth post on ClockhouseCore.)

No, instead of rambling on about my own motivation I wanted to instead try and motivate you all. I'm going to be doing this by writing down 10 different writing prompts to be used when you’re not really sure what you want to write about. I will try to post even more prompts later on, but I hope that right now these are enough and you’ll find a prompt/plot that will inspire you to go and write soemthing.

The prompts:

Prompt 1.
“We were playing hide & seek and decided to venture into an unknown room. The door accidently closed behind us, so now I guess we’re stuck in a bunker.”

Prompt 2. “When my parents died my siblings and I all inherited something valuable. My sister got the jewelry, my brother got the vintage cars and I got the “art” collection… Thanks, but I really have no space for 8 massive dollhouses depicting extremely detailed crime scenes.”

Prompt 3. “You’re sneaking out of the car at the gas station while everyone else is still asleep, and then trying to hitch a ride from the first car that passes through during this late hour. You need to get as far away as possible”

Prompt 4. “A love letter was scanned at the printer at my office and uploaded in a map onto a server that everyone has access to. An investigation has just begun to find the writer of the letter, and the intended recipient.”

Prompt 5. “Our train just stopped in the middle of its route. It has already been an hour, there has been no communication about the reason why we’re stopped, the doors to the other cabins are locked and at this point we’re all getting a bit worried. It doesn’t help that all of the other cabins suddenly look deserted.”

Prompt 6. “After an accident involving you and another person, you’ve started to become convinced that this person may actually be immortal. Something else happens that makes you even more suspicious, and well, now you’ve just got to find out for sure.”

Prompt 7. "You visited a fortune teller and instead of being told about your future, they instead gave you a slip of paper with a two-digit number. Now for some reason this number seems to start appearing everywhere: a house number, bus route, birthday date, etc. It would’ve been just a stupid coincidence if it weren’t for the fact that this number seems to lead you to this one specific person.”

Prompt 8. “I’ve been contracted to empty the apartment of a person that has passed away. Everything is going like it’s supposed to, except maybe for the fact that the fridge magnets seem to want to tell me something.”

Prompt 9. “I’ve always been fascinated by short wave radio stations, so I spent most of my time listening to different kinds of broadcasts: from people casually talking to each other in a town over to far away Soviet number stations. There’s one frequent transmission that I visit the most though, and I may have slowly started to become obsessed by it.

Prompt 10. You’re a press photographer and while the job is exciting, a recent event involving someone you know personally has left you with an SD card that you should probably dispose of. You don’t do that, of course.

So, that’s it for today. You have my permission to use these prompts for your writing. If it’s original stories or fanfiction, I just hope that I can inspire you to start putting some words down today.

Have a great day today!

(This is definitely not a requirement, but if you do decide to use one or more of these prompts, then I would love to know about it.)
